On Friday night, unidentified drones flew over Denmark’s Karup military airbase, marking the latest drone incursion that has plagued Denmark for the past week. Officials have referred to the situation as a “hybrid attack,” insinuating Russian involvement. Russia has shot down claims they are responsible.
Police report up to two drones were seen on Friday (26 September) at 7:15 p.m. hovering over the area. Airbase Karup is the main air base of the Royal Danish Air Force and home to a number of units including Helicopter Wing Karup, RDAF Air Control Wing and Operation Support Wing.
Denmark’s Ministry of Defense has not yet acknowledged this latest incursion despite reports from local police. Media pundits are surmising that authorities are tightlipped due to the importance of Karup, being the largest military airbase in Denmark. Philip Turle, France 24 International Affairs Editor stated, “There is a fear that if something isn’t done quickly, then this could all spiral out of control.”
At 12:10 p.m. earlier today, drone sightings shut down runways at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. According to authorities, the Polderbaan strip was closed to flights for about 45 minutes. The drone was seen 150 meters in the air and the captain of a Transavia flight claimed the drone flew only 50 meters from his wing. Several police units and a helicopter were dispatched in search of the drone but could find no trace.
Whether this turns out to be a drone, a UAP, the Russians or a balloon, the result is that #drones have started to become a disruption to routine flights in Europe, with air operations becoming as predictable as a game of Russian Roulette.
All the close encounters with the drone kind are testing the wills, and the wiles, of Heads of State. Nerves are beginning to fray as the people want straight answers but authorities are throwing their hands in the air and making vague threatening gestures to each other. Earlier today, U.S. Rep. Burlison commented:
“There’s a lot of strange stuff that’s going on. We see right now there’s a lot of activity that’s happening in Europe. There’s an airport that’s been shut down three nights in a row, because of anomalous drones, potentially, or some other things that are in the skies. We all know what happened in New Jersey. Actually we don’t know what happened in New Jersey.”
French President Emmanuel Macron chimed in as well, demanding a stronger response to the mystery drone incursions, saying, “We must strengthen our posture by committing more resources … the security of Europe is at stake.” Macron is flatly blaming Russia for the drone debacle.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded promptly by stating, “We have nothing to hide … we never direct our drones or missiles at states in the EU or in NATO.”
No one is sure how this is going to end as it is still an ongoing mystery but, for those who remember, it may bring flashbacks of an early video game by Sega Genesis adapted from a Japanese video game called Zero Wing. The opening scene, which became an internet meme, had the phrase, “All your base are belong to us.”
